Quoted from a Talkgold forum post,
Due Diligence is a simple investigation of online opportunities BEFORE you join and could save you a lot of money by investing a little time reading. Scammers make claims of people just like you getting rich online and you just want a little ‘piece’ of the action. That makes you ripe for the picking, an easy target, for the Next Best Thing to hit the Internet. The truth is that better than 95% of the people who fall victim to the scammers never make a penny, even though they may work hard and be committed. If you are offered easy money in some get-rich-quick-scheme, you need to do some Due Diligence before you foolishly get your family and friends involved, unless you are willing to lose all your credibility with these people, which will usually cause lasting negative affects on your relationships. Furthermore it could create legal problems that make you personally liable to repay the losses of anyone who you personally signed in this “Opportunity” which turns out to be a “scam”.
The full article seems helpful and I would recommend anyone who thinks he/she has been scammed to just refer to it.

Like what the article say, invest with due diligence
THE 7 GOLDEN RULES.
1. Never invest more than you can afford to lose.
(Experienced investors know this is a basic rule)
2. Never place all your eggs in one basket. Diversify your investments. That ‘can’t lose’ program is just one of many opportunities, including off-line property and investments.
(Experienced investors always spread their portfolio widely)
3. Aim to recover all personal spends as your number one strategy. Then continue to play with your profits.
4. Aim to build a private investment portfolio so that you are self funding even if some of the programs you invest in suddenly disappear - rest assured that MANY if not most will.
5. Never give up the day JOB until you are self funding. As tempting as it may seem, your day job is GUARANTEED income. HYIP money is often ‘fools gold’.
6. Never introduce friends and acquaintances until you are at least in the black and then, only when they understand the risks and are prepared to take FULL responsibility for their own decisions.
(You can’t be held accountable for other people’s decisions)
7. Continue to educate yourself. The HYIP world keeps changing.
