Never ever open any unsolicited mails claiming from E-gold that they will wipe your account out if you do not login within the next 24 hours or any of such sort. Emails are easily spoofed. The scammer could send you an email with @e-gold.com and direct you to another site from the links of the email (such as e-Qold.com).
As long as your settings of your browsers is high, you’re still partially safe. BUT in any event, you realised you’ve been tricked, just log on to https://www.e-gold.com/ and change all your passwords (including alt passphrase) within the next 15 min, you should be still safe.
When in doubt whether you’re in the authentic e-gold website, you can check the SSL certificate (till date, there’s no way to spoof SSL certs), the details as follows from https://www.e-gold.com/security.html :
Checking for an active padlock in the browser status bar (right bottom of your IE or Firefox)- Checking the browser location bar for a site name beginning with (exact spelling is critical): https://www.e-gold.com/
- Checking the SSL certificate being using for for appropriate “Issued To”, “Issued By”, and Thumbprint fields. At the e-gold web site, these values are:
Issued to: www.e-gold.com
Issued by: VeriSign
Valid from: 11/22/2004 to 12/1/2006
Thumbprint: F84F 522C E958 A443 5A37 8934 6D77 2D70 096C 6A82
Lastly, we’ll touch on the tools you can use to avoid all these nonsense from internet “geeks” online in the next post slightly later today
