We’ve warned you before about egold, or any other e-currency, phishing before. Phishing is when someone sends you to a like site or installs spyware on your computer in an attempt to get your password and steal your money. Today I received a new twist to the phishing scam. This con-artist tried to get me to open a .zip file claiming that it is screenshots of egold that came from my account.
Here is the scam (without the attachment, screenshots.zip)
Hi,
Yesterday I checked my E-Gold account and was really amazed to find about 200 gold ounces (100,177.90 USD) there. I have never had such a big amount of money available (the last balance of my account was only 177.90 USD) and I have no even a slightest idea about the origin of the money. Upon receiving the requested history of records I realized that the transfer had been made 2 hours before, and the Memo field contained your e-mail address (email address removed). In a short run, while I was making the inquiries, the money and MY own savings of 177 USD disappeared. I changed my password immediately and now intend to clarify the situation and to investigate the people, who involved me in the unfair play. Fortunately I managed to save a screenshot copy, enclosed to my letter. Hope for your assistance in this matter.
I feel a little bit scared and still hesitate to apply to E-gold support service.
Best regards,
John Gavery.
DO NOT CLICK ON ANY ATTACHMENT FROM SOMEONE YOU DO NOT KNOW AND/OR HAVE NOT ASKED FOR AN ATTACHMENT!
The best thing to do with these types of emails is just delete them. As long as there is money, there will be someone trying to steal it from you. Don’t help them by falling for phishing emails.

Thanks for the rewarning Sharon. These are the reminders that we need constantly here. Btw, Gold prices are fluctuating like crazy these days.
Hello Friends
I happened to open this zip file
and i am concerned
How can i remedy to that
Gosh i found out too late
Any help most appreciated
Run a full virus scan of your computer. In addition, run a full spyware scan. Clear out all temp files. (Run a search for all files with *.tmp,*.chk,~*.*. Delete as many as you can. Not all of them can be deleted.) This may or may not catch whatever was most likely loaded to your computer.
If you don’t have a spyware program, I like Spyware Doctor. I also use Adaware, which is another good program.
Good luck,
Sharon
You could add http://www.antivirus.com to your list too for an online scan from Trend.
Thanks guys
U r great
I have ad adware se personal and |Norton 2006
Shall run a full sytem scan and
clear all temp files
Once bitten twice shy:)
I’d recommend you to use other antvir instead of Norton, kinda hate them and they’re pretty incompetent as some virii are written to cripple Norton if they could happen to infect the PC.
I completely agree with Jude on this one. Norton and Macafee are targets for viruses because they are so popular. Norton is a huge hog, too. I use Kaspersky, but they are a bit more pricy than most. If I remember right, they are about $60/year. I’ve seen several excellent recommendations for Zone Alarm, too.
If you go to www.cnet.com, www.zdnet.com or www.pcworld.com you can find reviews of virus and spyware software.
Good luck to you!

I got an email almost exactly like the one sharonsopinion got. And I don’t even have an E-gold account. Here’s the one I got, without the attachment screenshots.zip:
Good day,
Yesterday I was checking my egold account and was
surprised at what I saw; I had almost 200 ounces of
gold (USD 100,177.90). I never had so much money, (I
only had USD177.90 in my account at he time of this
transaction) I don’t know how did they get there. I
clicked on history and saw that money were transferred
2 hours ago, in the memo field I saw your email
address: (email address removed) When I was trying to sort this out -
money disappeared from my egold account. I lost my
money and money that came from nowhere. I changed my
password immediately and now I am trying to find out
what has happened. Luckily I made a screenshot with
the transaction history for you to see and tell me
what is going on. I hope that you will let me know
what has happened. I did not contact egold support
yet. I hope that we will be able to sort this matter
ASAP. Before I will contact them.
Regards,
John Gavery.
I rarely get email of this type, and I was wondering if there was somewhere I should forward it? I didn’t open the attached .zip file.
I got the identical email today and the first thing I’ve done is run a virus scan. Which is still running of course.
Instead of from: John Gavery, its from a Jim Duffy “jim duffy .”
First off, I don’t have an egold account, secondly I’m not that dumb to be caught by phishers.
Hey Mamid, nice to hear that you have a virus scan running. By the way, you don’t have an Egold account, so you’ve invested in any of the programs that doesnt require Egold?
Yep I got this one signed Stephan someone.
I replied yeh if you ever get your funds back lend me a $100 lmao
Cant believe people open email attachments.
