Those of you in the United States and Canada are very familiar with Daylight Savings Time (DST) coming up at 2 AM, Sunday, March 11th. This post is for readers in other countries that deal with those in the US and Canada.
In the Spring, we move our clocks ahead by one hour. In the Fall, we move our clocks back one hour. This year we’re springing forward 3 weeks early for energy conservation purposes, which will play havoc with preprogrammed computers and cell phones. The purpose is to catch more sunlight hours in the summer. The idea was first thought of by Benjamin Franklin (early to bed/early to rise) in 1784 when he was trying to urge Parisians to get up earlier and use the sunlight, thereby saving evening candles. Since then it has been put into practice and revoked several times. (Wikipedia, World Time Zones)
Daylight savings time occurs on different dates and at different times by country. The US and Canada use the same DST date and time (2 AM). To make matters more confusing, not all areas of the US observe DST. A few areas stay on Standard Time.
New York, New York:
- Eastern Standard Time (EST) = GMT-5
- Eastern Daylight Savings Time (EDT) = GMT-4
Dallas, Texas:
- Central Standard Time (CST) = GMT-6
- Central Daylight Savings Time (CDT) = GMT-5
Denver, Colorado:
- Mountain Standard Time (MST) = GMT-7
- Mountain Daylight Savings Time (MDT) = GMT-6
Los Angeles, California
- Pacific Standard Time (PST) = GMT-8
- Pacific Daylight Savings Time (PDT) = GMT-7
Confused? Try living with it! LOL My purpose for this post is so that you can use the time changes for any contact, especially scheduled conferences, that you have with US and Canada based programs. If you don’t hear from them, check with them to see if they live in an area that is changing times on Sunday.
