In the past few days I’ve seen people posting their email address in comments. I’ve been editing them out for safety reasons. The authors of this blog do post their email address from time to time, but we know and accept the risks involved. Often posters in comments are not aware of the risks. So, here are some email safety tips:

    1. Never post your email in public blogs or forums. There are programs in existence that scrape email addresses from public places. The email addresses are then used for spamming and sold to other spammers.
    2. Only open mail that you are expecting or is from someone/somewhere you know. If you do open other email, always read it with the thought in mind, “Is this just for me or could it have been written for anyone?”
    3. Don’t be fooled if you see your name in an email title or salutation. Many scrape programs also scrape the entire post looking for a name. They also cross-check your email address with other information for your name. Email addresses with names sell higher than just email address.
    4. Never click on a link in an email from someone/somewhere you don’t know. Many have lost their entire e-gold (or any other e-currency) because they clicked on a link in an email that looked like it came from e-gold. The link took them to a site just like e-gold, but it’s set up to capture your information as you type it (keyloggers). Another scam is that you click on a link and it takes you to a site that is obviously not e-gold, so you close your browser and don’t think twice about it. Congratulations, you’ve just installed a Trojan that will get your log on information the next time you go to e-gold.
    5. Never open an attachment from someone/somewhere you don’t know.
    6. Always use your favorites or type in the address to go to your e-currency or any other site. E-Currencies will never email you a link to their site. Other businesses may email you a link, but it’s safer to either copy and paste it or type it in. Don’t link to it directly from an email.
    7. Use many email addresses. Use at least one email address for personal, one for e-currencies, another for business/investments and yet another for shopping, joining, etc. Never use your e-currency email address for anything but e-currencies. Never, ever give out your e-currency email address to anyone. Some even use a separate email address for each e-currency. For example, I use my NoBS HYIP email address only for this blog.
    8. Never email a password or other sensitive information to anyone. Use multiple, hard-to-figure-out passwords. Roboform works great for generating and storing your passwords in an encrypted file.
    9. Never use IE as your browser for emails or anything else. Even with the latest security in 7.0, it is not as safe as Firefox or Opera.

If anyone wants to reach out for information, I am willing to be a go-between. Just post “send an email to sharonsopinion@nobshyip.net and she will forward it to me.” I will never use either email address for any other purpose, nor will I give it away to anyone, except the intended, nor will I sell it. I do ask that you are clear in the header, so I know it’s a go between email. It will help if the next person posts “I sent an email to Sharon to give to you.”

If anyone has any email safety tips to add, please leave a comment. There are thieves, spammers and hijackers out there just waiting for someone to be gullible. Please be safe and don’t let that someone be you!

I discovered this little gem a couple months ago. It’s an email re-direct service. I’ve been using the free version and so far It’s worked like a charm. My wish is that I had discovered it years ago. I think I’d be 99% spam free by now if I had.

The site is plain and looks very old school but dont let that fool you. Do a little digging and you’ll discover how feature-rich this tool really is. Here’s the URL:
