Hi,
I don't know whether this is the properplace for this query, but please help or guide anyway.
I can't access my e gold account.Whenever I try , they say "open proxy or . . . ." etc. I do have spyware and anti virus on my PC. I don't know what open proxy means or how it came to my computer. The trouble started some days back when I wanted to access but The PIN took forever arriving and I was logged out. This happened 3 or 4 times. What should I do? I have very little e gold in my account now, so will abandoning this one and opening another account help? can the same thing may happen there? Also, I need to format my computer . Do I deal with the old account and/or open a new account after formatting or before?

It's cool that everyone here is setting trends or are trend setters.

I moved over to linux as soon as Windows Vista came on the market.

I happened to notice that my Windows operating system suddenly became unstable. I'm sure it had nothing to do with Windows auto install robot.

So now I run my operating system under Ubuntu Dapper. An older version but its real stable and so too is my computer. The great news is that I don't have to upgrade my hardware.

I have a dual boot but hardly never boot into windows. In fact, have not looked back. Nor will you.

I know that the Ubuntu theme is, well, how can you put it straight out of cloud cookoo land but you can change the colors etc and make it your own...

The reason I say you are setting trends is that even Dell is now selling preinstalled Ubuntu (linux computers):

http://direct2dell.com/one2one/archive/2007/05/01/13147.aspx

Those of you who want to try it out can get a live CD for free delivered to your home address here:

https://shipit.ubuntu.com/

That's if you can't be bothered to burn it on a cd yourself.

Yes, another more important point. When you decide to load Ubuntu it will handle the entire process for you including creating a dual boot system. It reall is linux designed for humans.

Hi guys,

I know LiveCD is very safe. What about using "Sandboxie" ? It should be safe and convenient at the same time. Correct ?

Hi Robert,

Check the following link: xxx.knoppix.org
Run KNOPPIX on a computer without installing on your hard drive. Download, burn to CD, and boot your computer.

Knoppix is reported to be one of the most popular LiveCD Linux distributions. There are factors that contribute to the popularity of Knoppix:

* Knoppix was one of the first LiveCDs available, and is known as the "original" Debian-based LiveCD
* Its extensive hardware detection allows most systems to start Knoppix without any configuration
* Its ability to automatically connect to most kinds of networks
* Its utilities for system repair and troubleshooting

@Robert a LiveCD is a Linux Distribution that will boot entirely from a CD-Rom. The benefit is the fact that, 1. Linux is more secure than windows, and 2. running from a CD eliminates the possibility of having any mal-software installed onto your machine.

you can find LiveCDs for download at http://www.linux.org/dist/list.html and under category choose LiveCD

also find some at http://distrowatch.com/search.php?category=Live CD

btw, Nice article Makila, I love Linux LiveCds.

A "Live-CD" contains a whole operating OS (Linux) on a CD or DVD, including most programs for the daily use (browser, eMail client, word typing programs etc). You can't write on it, but you could save documents for example on a USB-Stick or (depends on the operating system you use on a Live-CD) on your harddrive.

Jude isnt the only writer here. :) I thought every honest admin knows about this way of protecting e-gold funds, but I guess I was wrong. I hope this article will be read by many to avoid future disasters.

I know we are all lazy and even tough we tell everyone to use a Live-CD I am the first to admit I dont use it myself very often. But on the other hand I dont run a program and I have not much need to protect the funds. If I have 100$ in e-gold its a lot already and if I loose those, its *only* my own gold.

Jude: that´s what I always recommend to many people, and I am glad to see this post here, great!!

I recommend the first of this live-cds: knoppix (http://www.knoppix.com), although there are a lot of different live cds out there, and of course when knoppix is loaded you should do some thing more to be protected: install netcraft in your firefox browser to avoid pishing, and also load the firewall inside knoppix.
