Listen and learn.

AV is useless. Whitelisting is the only solution, e.g. securewave.com, since AV is always playing catch-up. No serious server administrator would use AV - we haven't for over 5 years and not one trojan or virus or piece of malware has been installed. And no subscription fees and scans are ever necessary.

Remember: AV = worthless. By the time you find you have a virus, you will be infected.

Remember: Rootkit viruses cannot be detected by 99% of AV scanners.

Remember: You can buy a custom virus online for $100 that is not in any AV signature database.

Whitelisting is the way ahead. Forget AV.

My free synergy suite does an excellent job, but if you have something that seems very nasty and persistent, try NOD32 and (not or) Kaspersky. Nod32 has a free online scan and Kaspersky has a free 30-day trial.

Norton has been improving their AV software. It's about time. 2003 was the last good year. I will run tests at a later date. It's always been good at detecting and removing malware, it just screwed up your computer a lot.

PCTools has released a free version of Spyware Doctor which still protects and removes as good as the paid version, but lacks a few of the bells and whistles. This may replace Spyware Terminator as the best free anti-spyware program. (Still testing).

My website is now online, and already is in the process of being upgraded.

Both are very good products, but Cyberhawk will remain free while at some point, Prevx will start to cost $$$.

Save your money for something more important.

Well we have been playing with some of the new breed of security packages out there which are faster to respond to new threats, traditional anti virus programs require some one to be infected, then send the virus in to be analysed, before a new signature can be made to update the virus scanner,,,, this can take time and time is always against you whilst on the web. Prevx1 and Cyberhalk are two new wave scanners which are gaining ground. Free versions available have a look if you have time.....

Yes, Brow, my "Synergy Suite" does seem to fill all the gaps. Of course, as malware develops and programs change to meet these developments, I reserve the right to change my recommendations.

Since my site is still in the development stage, I have not assigned it a standalone URL. You can click on my name above or go to http://www.elbertonga.com/freecomputersecurity for a preview.

I will let you know when it goes live. Thanks for the interest.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Does it the programs you recommend to fill in the gaps when using AVG?

How timely. I am developing a site to discuss and recommend just such questions.

NOD32 is my favorite, with Kap a close second. However, NO one program can give total protection.

I recommend AVG 7.5 Free as "part" of a FREE synergistic solution that can approach 100% protection. My criteria are - it must offer good protection, have an active component (always on), and monitor email. Combined with selected programs that fill in the gaps, and you can have very good protection.

My web-in-progress (shameless plug) can explain further. I am updating it almost every day, so stay with me.

Kaspersky is a top-notch program. I like NOD32 too but I prefer Kaspersky over it. Norton sucks. You can get a free version from AOL here: http://www.activevirusshield.com/

I use AVG free version and so far so good. I once had a paid Norton but ran into trouble when I upgraded my computer and Norton expected me to pay more for the upgraded version AV. That was when I went in search of alternatives and found a lot people like the freebies.
I have recently downloaded the Comodo free AV (and firewall) and after looking for any positive reports will install them and check them out.

I have also tried a few others but either had conflicts with other software - mostly anti spyware/malware or found them too cumbersom for my tastes.

I prefer to waste my time with Auto.ExchangeTrade.com. In fact, there are a few oldies I like to visit. Another is AussieEarners.com. Granted none of them pay out like they use to but you never know. Surviving is good enough even vanishing form the radar and returning is good enough. As long as the will is there to eventually recover. I myself use these sites to promote with. For example I paid to get AGLOGO promoted and now I'm in the top percentile for referrals in that program. I know it seems to be dragging but at least I'm in there. You got to be in it to win it.

I digress admittedly but I think talking about antivirus stuff isn't going to arouse my speculative nature.

To me, when it comes to less resource hogging anti-virus, I settled on CA's e-Trust antivirus.

It cleans my e-mails and has real-time protection and I hardly know it's there. It also updates itself in the background.

Beats the pants off of Norton's Antivirus. I just like non-bloated software.

Which is why I think Firefox should be left alone and features should be added via add-ons, but I digress. :)

Be careful cashking, I used before nod32 cracked and the patch was encrypted. I send it to some antivirus companies and some of them reported a virus, others not. That's because in my laptop (the only machine that I must use windows) I ordered a paid copy of nod32 antivirus: more relaxed.

Jude: there are a lot of polymorphic and other forms of intelligent viruses (with processes hooked, etc) that nod32 can detect and others not ;)

wiztek,

If you're not intelligent enough to know what has backdoors in it and what doesn't, then you really shouldn't be installing cracked copies of software, LOL!

As a former sysadmin, I know a thing or two about computers.. been using computers for 20 years now and I have yet to catch a trojan ;-)

I think that normally there is a great difference in paid antivirus against free antivirus.

I personally like a lot nod32 due to "personal" reasons ;)

But it's well known that all antivirus can not fight against such amount of new viruses, as Kapersky posted before:
