    Reasons to start a blog…

You are an interesting person and have lots of interesting experience in life. You’re a specialist in some fields and would want to share your work with everyone on the Internet. You just want to keep a weblog so you can look back and smile to yourself as you look through the entries. You’re an entrepreneur and wish to get a pie of the Internet to promote yourself, as well as make some money from it.

Well, these are some of the reasons why I can think of why should you be starting a blog of your own; and we’re here to focus on monetizing, making money online as well here at Nobs.

    Why Wordpress?

    Wordpress is your friend!

It’s easy to install and customize, the community support for this open source blog is great. I remember the time when MovableType dominated the scene when it was free, but all these are gone when MT starts to licence its own work, and Wordpress spring into the picture. As compared to any of the distributions of open source blogs out there, Wordpress remains my favourite.

You can customise it to the likes of any sites with Wordpress, and even make it seem that it’s operating like a Content Management System too.

Differences between using a free web based blog provider and having your own blog installed?

Yes, there are those free blog hosting providers such as Blogspot, Live Journal and more and you can save the hassle of installing one by just registering with them and start pumping contents into it. So why installing a copy of your own and wasting money on web hosting?

As you sign up with them, you notice there are so many terms and conditions, restricting you to your full potential of your design, content as well as placing any sort of advertisements, which will be what we will focus, discuss and develop tutorials in the upcoming weeks.

It’s always easier for me and I believe for anyone else to come up with a design and have everything uploaded and dumped into my web host space so my readers see whatever I designed and have for them instead of learning how to use the free tools which the free blogs provide to change the settings everywhere.

Cumbersome! save the trouble, install a copy on your own and rip the full benefits!

Also, you’d like to know that Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a really important part to your journey in starting a blog if you are thinking about monetizing and making money online. Some people even buy and sell domain names for a living. Kinda like web real estate, if you want to put it that way. Having your own copy, with a unique domain name of your own makes things totally different as you rip the full benefits of SEO.

So What Has This Got to Do with Making Money Online?

You’ve heard so much stories about people making a living online by affiliate sales, selling ad spaces, and you still remember the guy who sold 1 million pixels worth of ads for a dollar each? You’ve heard about Google Adsense as well and how people are earning checks monthly from them too. Things can happen if you are unique and pretty content rich, but you’ll have to take the first step at least.

Start from somewhere, that’s what we here at Nobs are trying to get our community to do.

    What’s Next?

It’s really easy to install a copy of Wordpress. I’ll put you guys through with walk through on the next few entries.

Sign up for our free mailing list! It’s spam free. We have an update for you every month on the 15th, and when there are new articles which might interest you, we’ll send an alert too.

It won’t clutter too much of your inbox space, I promise ;)

Before thinking to design and host your site, make sure you know about the facts in this business. A cheap web hosting may not be up to the latest web hosting review, but nonetheless will deliver. For dedicated servers however, you will have to get godaddy.

I look forward to reading your future installments. BTW, can someone who knows excel & word, but other than that is a complete dummy when it comes to computers easily learn this?

No problem lily, no biggie. Just follow the screenshots next time. You’ll be surprised at how easy it is to install Wordpress.

I look forward to learning more Jude :-)
Anyone know if they have something incredibly dumbed down for tech / code idiots like myself?

Has anyone invented something like a screenshot sort of look for your blog and where you simply use your mouse to move the banners, etc around? And by right clicking on say a category title, it gives you options to change your font look or to resize it without going into the code? (Like the code automatically changes in the background while you’re moving things around for example without actually having to go into the code itself)

If someone hasn’t invented that sort of method .. they need to. They’d be rich. Because people like me need it as simple as possible while also being able to have total control over their blog without (1) feeling like an idiot and (2) feeling like a genius when it’s all done.

Nice timing Jude! I just finished setting up my personal blog yesterday, and wrote a small piece on making wordpress less duplicate content prone:

For anyone thinking of setting up a blog, using your own name as a domain name can be as good a choice as any (it can brand you). You could create a hosted blog on blogger or wordpress.com, but if you take a little time to get to know how to install and configure wordpress yourself, it will be much better for you in the long run.

      Hey Jude,

Nice to see you are expanding into all the possibilities of blogging!

      & there are many!!!

Video is the real deal these days & it’s here to stay! So if you do not have video on your blog you are missing the real potential in grabbing your visitors attention & interest on your blog. Just 3 years ago, video was not common on the internet.

But today, video is becoming a standard for websites

Here is a GREAT new little software that will allow you to put your own video on your site or blog in just a matter of minutes! Cool! :-)

Wordpress Blogs can be used for more than Just Blogging, take http://www.filmables.com for example. It is a wordpress blog, but it is all about Videos, rating and sharing them. Anyone can register to contribute to the fun! It is a great Idea…of course it is mine.

I have been using wordpress for many things another is http://www.spam-sense.com I am using wordpress to conduct an experiment on web crawlers and Spam Bots to see how fast they grab email addresses off of the web then start spamming it.

Of course there is ponziscams.com also

I have several more examples of blogs as well. I LOVE WORDPRESS!
