This is a continuation tutorial to our guide on ‘Reasons to Start a Wordpress Blog‘.
We’ve talked about the benefits of running one on your own, with lesser restriction on contents (Your host terms and conditions might still apply in this case) and definitely all the space to play with.
First of all, decide a domain name for yourself. (e.g. http://duh.com/) Something relevant to what you will be blogging would good for a naming convention, or maybe you can even personalize by having your own name as a domain name (if it is not taken yet). I’d recommend GoDaddy for all your registrar needs.
Next, Find a cheap and reliable host to host your website. A good forum for such recommendation would be WebHosting Talk Forums. Alternatively, you can email me to see if I have any space on my dedicated that I can rent to you as well on an annual basis!
Once you have your host set up properly, it’s time for some action (it’s gonna be real easy, trust me)

Download Wordpress
Head down to http://wordpress.org/download/ and download the latest copy of Wordpress (current version is 2.2.1 at the time of this tutorial). Choose the .ZIP version if you’re a XP/ Vista user, or .TAR.GZ version if you’re a Linux, Unix user.
I’ll be demonstrating this on my Microsoft Vista platform. Save the file to your desktop.
Configure your Wordpress
Now Unzip (Or Untar) your downloaded file (wordpress-2.2.1.zip in this case) in a folder on your desktop. Expand your Wordpress-2.2.1 directory and expand the wordpress directory in it. You’ll see a bunch of core files for the blog.
Look out for wp-config-sample file. Open it up with Notepad by right clicking it, ‘Open With…’, ‘Notepad’
Now here’s the tricky part. We’re gonna leave this Notepad aside and start creating a database with a user for the blog with my host. Most of us will be using PHPMyAdmin on Cpanel to create one. So I’ll guide you along with the screenshots below.
Logon to your Cpanel. (Usually https://www.yourdomain.com:2083/ ). Look out for the mySQL databases icon and click it.

Create a database, I’ll name mine wp. Key in wp on New Database box, and click the Create Database Button. A sb_wp appears on my mySQL.
Create a user. I’ll name mine wpuser. Key in wpuser in the Username box and password to the password box, and click Create User. A sb_wpuser appears on my mySQL.
Add the user to the database by selecting sb_wpuser for the user and sb_wp for the database. Remember to check on All for Privileges. We’re done!

Once after creating the database and adding the user to it, it’s time to edit your wp-config-sample file. Head back to your Notepad.
- Replace ‘putyourdbnamehere’ to ’sb_wp’ (in my case, the prefix is sb_ in front. You might have a different one. Use your own prefix.)
- Replace ‘usernamehere’ to ’sb_wpuser’
- Replace ‘yourpasswordhere’ to ‘password’
Save your wp-config-sample file as wp-config by clicking on File, Save As. Change the Save as type to ‘All Files’ and change the file name from wp-config-sample.php to wp-config.php.

Uploading Wordpress
I’ll be using CuteFTP to upload the files onto my host. Most of the FTP clients work similarly, and if you have any problems with using your FTP client, refer to the FAQ of the program. Find some directory that has a public_html on the remote end.
Depending on whether you want your blog to be published in the domain (http://duh.com/) or a subdomain like (http://duh.com/blog/), create the directories accordingly. I will place all the files onto the domain. So I shift my files all from my local computer to the host.

Installing Wordpress
Under your Firefox browser (or Internet Explorer), key in your domain with the prefix wp-admin/install.php behind (eg. http://duh.com/wp-admin/install.php). It will bring you to a installation page. Configure everything. And you won’t believe how easy is it from here.
If you can see this login menu, you’re all set.

Using Wordpress?
Head down to http://yourdomain.com/wp-admin/, login with your Userid and Password. And you’re all set!
Try to fool around with the settings and add new posts, do not be afraid to spoil your copy at this point (for education purposes) since there are no data or previous entries yet. Also, you can always reinstall your copy should you have any problems with it.
Buzz me if you have any problems going around with Wordpress!. Have fun! ![]()

The easiest way to start a wordpress blog is by signing up with a shared host that allows 1 click installs of different web software - they all contain wordpress, making it very easy to setup your blog in seconds. Then you can get on with the job of customising it.
Hosts that provide 1 click installs:
servage.net
dreamhost.com
midphase.com
There are loads more, but these are some of the first that sprung to mind. Many hosts will also include a free domain name when you sign up.
Once you get your Wordpress blog up and running, you need to know how to monetize it.
Two places that come to mind are:
http://www.johnchow.com/ — John Chow makes over $10,000 a month.
Don’t forget to download the best FREE e-book you are ever going to read about making money online:
http://www.johnchow.com/book/make-money-online.pdf
Another place I visit for making money know how is:
http://www.doshdosh.com/
A blog about how to make money online with topics like blogging for money.
Thanks for the links NelsonN. I’ve been always reading these two blogs as well and will start writing materials on the blog similar to theirs if there is no updates on hyips.
